Private Driving Lessons in Eastern and Central Maine

One-on-one instruction for permit holders, licensed adults and anyone retesting

Private lessons are booked one student to one instructor, for anyone holding a valid Maine learner’s permit or a valid licence. We can normally schedule an appointment within two to three business days, and lessons run on real roads in Bangor, Ellsworth, Skowhegan, Waterville and East Millinocket rather than in an empty lot.

Six reasons people book one-on-one instruction

Private lessons are not only for new teen drivers. Roughly half the people who call us already hold a licence. Here is who we actually see, and what each case needs.

Permit holders under 21

If your permit was issued before you turned 21, Maine requires you to hold it for six months before applying for a road test, and to log 70 hours of supervised driving with at least 10 of those hours after dark. Private lessons are how most students get through the night-driving requirement with an instructor rather than a nervous parent.

Extra behind-the-wheel time

Some students finish driver education, or pass the written permit exam through the state, and still want a few more hours before the road test. We use that time on the specific manoeuvres that cost people points rather than repeating what you already do well.

Taking the road test in our car

Students who practise in a Beal Driving Academy vehicle sit the State of Maine exam in a car they already know. Familiar mirrors, familiar brake feel, and a clean, properly maintained vehicle on exam day. We cannot guarantee a pass, but we can remove the unfamiliar-car variable.

Retesting after a failed road test

If you have failed the state road test more than once, you may be required to log additional training with a driving school before testing again. We start by finding out what actually went wrong, which is usually one or two repeatable habits rather than a general lack of skill.

Aging drivers and medical evaluations

If you or a family member is worried about whether someone is still safe behind the wheel, we can take them out for an assessment. Drivers on a medical suspension through the state are sometimes required to complete private lessons before testing for reinstatement.

Expired permits

When a permit expires you must sit the exam again for a new one, but you are not required to restart the waiting period before applying for a road test, provided you have logged your 70 hours.

ADULT LEARNER DRIVERS

Learning to drive as an adult

There is no upper age limit on a first driving lesson, and no requirement to sit in a classroom with fifteen-year-olds to get one. Adults who never learned, who learned abroad and need to adapt to Maine roads, or who have not driven in years all book the same private lessons. Lessons are one to one, so nobody else hears how it went.

ROAD TEST PREPARATION

Sitting the Maine road test in a car you already know

Road licensing in this region runs through the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The Bangor branch is at 396 Griffin Road, Suite 202, open 8:00 to 4:00 Monday to Friday, on 207-942-1319. Call them to confirm road test scheduling, or ask us and we will point you to the right branch.

The car is already familiar

You will have practised in the same vehicle you test in, so mirror positions, seat adjustment, brake travel and blind spots are all known quantities before the examiner gets in.

You can make adjustments first

Students are able to set the car up the way they are used to before the exam begins, rather than discovering an unfamiliar car’s quirks during the test itself.

The vehicle will pass inspection

Road tests can be refused over a vehicle fault. Ours are clean, reliable and maintained for exactly this purpose, so the car is not what ends your test.

The fee is separate and small

The state road test fee is $40 with an AAA membership and $50 without. That is paid for the test itself and is not part of your lesson cost.

Private lessons are billed separately from the $580 driver education course. If you have not yet taken driver education and you are under 18, start there instead.

Questions we get about private lessons

Do I need a permit to book a private driving lesson?

Yes. Private lessons are available to anyone holding a valid Maine learner’s permit or a valid driver’s licence. If you do not have a permit yet and you are under 18, you will need to complete driver education first, which is what makes a 15-year-old eligible to apply.

How soon can I get an appointment?

We can normally schedule a private lesson within two to three business days. Call 207-990-6099 or email info@bealdrivingacademy.com and we will find the first slot that works at your nearest location.

Can I take my road test in your car?

Yes. Students may sit the State of Maine road test in a Beal Driving Academy vehicle. Practising and testing in the same car removes the unfamiliar-vehicle variable on exam day. The state road test fee is separate, at $40 with an AAA membership and $50 without.

I am an adult who never learned to drive. Is this for me?

Yes, and it is more common than people expect. Adults over 21 are not subject to the six-month permit holding period that applies to younger drivers. Lessons are one to one, cover highway and city driving as well as quiet streets, and are arranged around your schedule.

I have failed the road test more than once. What happens now?

After repeated failures you may be required to complete additional training with a driving school before testing again. We start by identifying what the examiner actually marked you down for. In most cases it is one or two specific habits rather than a broad skill problem, which is exactly what one-on-one time is good for.

Do you offer senior driving evaluations as well?

Yes, as a separate service. A senior driving evaluation is an objective, private assessment of physical, decision-making and social driving skills, and most end with minor adjustments rather than a lost licence. See our senior driving evaluations page.
